Just as a reminder for you and your clients, all people traveling to the United Kingdom starting on April 2nd 2025 will need a UK ETA (Electronic Travel Authorisation) and must apply for a UK ETA in advance, unless they are excluded.
Some useful information about this new document:
What is the UK ETA
- ETA is the abbreviation for the UK Electronic Travel Authorisation is a new entry requirement for visitors from certain countries. This is an electronic permission to travel to the UK,
- similar to: the ESTA for the USA or the ETA for Canada
Who does not need to apply
- Passengers with a British or Irish passport, diplomats, visa nationals and those already granted permission to enter or remain in the country, will not need a UK ETA to travel to the UK. All visa nationals will still require a visa.
Who needs to apply
All other passengers will need a UK ETA to travel to the UK:
- EU citizens require a UK ETA as of April 2nd 2025 and can apply now.
- Non-EU citizens (including visa free country citizens) had required a UK ETA as of January 8th 2025 already.
- Traveling with children: Every family member needs their own UK ETA, regardless of age.
- New/multiple passports: If you get a new passport, you will need a new UK ETA. If you hold more than one passport, remember to travel with the passport linked to the UK ETA.
Validity of an UK ETA
This ETA is valid:
- for two years and permits visits to the UK for up to 6 months
- Valid for entry by air, land and sea.
UK ETA fee
- currently cost £10 fee (approx. 12 € /13 $)
- from 09th of April 2025 will be £16 fee (approx. 19 € / 21 $)
Advantage of this ETA
- It replaces the single-use Electronic Visa Waiver (EVW) scheme, offering a multi-entry option at a lower cost.
How long it takes to receive UK ETA
- Usually within 3 working days, sometimes longer.
