Wellness resorts in Tuscany
So why not travel to distant destinations in order to relax in natural hot springs? Known as one of the most beautiful regions in Italy, Tuscany enchants visitors with its unique culture, culinary specialities and breathtaking scenery. However, what many tourists do not realise is that this area is also very rich in sulphur due to several ancient volcanoes, most notably Monte Amiata.
As a result, hot water from natural springs, which are particularly rich in minerals that regenerate the body and mind, also spring up here. There are several places from the hilly Crete Senesi to the Maremma where you can relax in contact with nature.
The tradition of wellness in Tuscany is not new. The trend goes way back to the time of the Etruscans and Romans. Even back then, people enjoyed the warm water. This is not only pleasant, but the thermal water has healing properties as well.
We would like to introduce to you 4 free natural spas – you can already enjoy pure relaxation while reading this
Cascate del Mulino
Located in the southern Maremma region of Tuscany, a particularly hot highlight waits for you. We are talking about the warm and natural Cascate del Mulino thermal spring. The thermal town of Saturnia with its sulphur springs is located in the province of Grosseto. In Cascate del Mulino, 800 litres / per second flow down the waterfalls. Visitors lie, sit and relax in the pools of varying sizes and depths in the municipality of Manciano, where the water temperature is a pleasant 37 degrees.
Terme Bagni San Filippo – centuries-old bathing culture
Bathe like the Romans used to! This is possible in Castiglione d’Orcia, in the province of Siena. The Bagni San Filippo thermal baths are located here. Even the Etruscans and Romans knew about the warm springs and refreshed themselves in their waters. The Bagni San Filippo are considered to be the oldest natural spa fed by hot springs. However, today’s thermal baths were built in the early 19th century only.
Terme di Petriolo
The Baths of Petriolo (or Bagni di Petriolo) are located in the Ombrone Valley. A valley along the river Farma, on the border between the two municipalities of Monticiano and Civitella Paganico, respectively in the provinces of Siena and Grosseto. The thermal water flows at a temperature of +43 °C and is characterised by the presence of hydrogen sulphide. These thermal springs can be used either free of charge or together with the neighbouring hotel facilities.
San Casciano dei Bagni
A town straight out of a Tuscan picture book: surrounded by city walls, narrow pedestrianised streets, covered stone passageways, a towering castle and a piazza lined with cafés. Outside the city walls, the classic landscape of the Val d’Orcia unfolds in all its splendour: gently rolling vineyards, olive groves, cypresses and every now and then the profile of a hilltop town as far as the eye can see.
Although the surroundings are as idyllic as you would expect, San Casciano has much more to offer than just the landscape. – A thermal spa for eternity. It seems to have been bubbling for centuries – the hot thermal water. However, it is quite hidden at the foot of the hill on which the little town stands, just follow the visitors who make a little pilgrimage to the baths equipped with towels.
Finally, history, culture, art and nature in combination with relaxing wellness makes the holiday through the year worthwhile.
